Chapter 9

“Being leader of the world or whatever you call it seems to be boring as hell,” I say to Tristan. I’ve spent nearly the whole afternoon perusing the reports I hadn’t gone through the other day, and he’s come to check on me. “Are you sure this is all we can do? Shouldn’t we be doing more?”

He leans against the doorjamb and pushes his hands into his jeans front pockets. The corded muscles of his forearms tighten, their power obvious. The man has one hell of a body and brains to go with the brawn. His cranky personality could use improvement . . . although that probably has more to do with me than with him.

“After everything they experienced, with all of the hate and all of the blood spilled, humanity has been as peaceful as they could possibly be,” he says. “There’s been a few skirmishes and issues here and there, but really, everyone wants to settle back into a new normal. That’s what they’ve been working on. Besides, they’re all underground, too afraid to venture out yet. Believe me, once that starts happening, I’m sure our jobs will become much more interesting.”

“So these directions, as you called them, that I’ve been giving . . .” I twirl my hand in the air over the pile of papers. “Do you really think that’s the best I can do?”

“You don’t remember, but one of my talents is to be able to identify the best solution if I’m given all of the facts. Based on what we know, yes, you’re doing the best you can do. The best anyone can do.”

“But shouldn’t I be building cities and governments or something? Doing more for the people to get this world back to the way it was?”

He lifts an eyebrow. “Is that what’s best for humanity? The way it was?”

I sigh. “As if I would remember. I just know it had to have been better than this life.”

His head tilts to the side. “Lots of people would disagree. What happened to the world was horrific, and this life is harder, but our world was pretty messed up before. Many people say the reset button has been hit, and we’ve been given a chance to start over and be better.” He pauses and straightens up. “Anyway, you’re not meant to establish a new world order and rule with an iron fist, Alexis. That’s not you, and that’s not the Angels. Not something they would want or expect. You’re doing exactly what the world needs right now. And like I said, soon enough, it will need more, and you will be there for it. We all will be.”

I gnaw on my bottom lip as my gaze slides over the papers. He sounds so confident, not only in me, but in everyone’s support of me. At least, of the real Alexis. I can’t help but wonder if he really feels that way about her or if he’s simply trying to make me feel better about things so I’ll worry more about the problems directly in front of us.
